Tom Cruise comes back for another entry into the franchise he is probably best known for. Unfortunately this installment goes the route of less espionage and more action packed eye candy. Feeling more like a Tom Cruise movie, including more of his trademarked death defying stunts, and no where near the intrigue of what Mission Impossible is supposed to be. Once again we get whisked away to a new breath taking place that is just gorgeous on the screen as the team heads to Dubai, with a good plot of the movie taking place at the wondrous Burj Khalifa. Here Agent Ethan Hunt goes far and beyond his call of duty in a sequence that leaves one in awe, a moment of hilarity from Simon Pegg‘s character, and followed with a unique sand storm chase that is the best part of the movie to me.
This film, while highly entertaining and at times humorous, felt like a bit of a letdown to me. I was hoping this was going to be a renewal for the series and bring it back to its dramatic tactical espionage roots, and not the last action hero path it took. It reminded me of Pierce Brosnan’s run as James Bond with the classic Goldeneye which brought James Bond back to life and then the 3 followup films which just fizzled out. This ends up being what I feel is nothing more than a showboat of Tom’s ability to still perform even if he looks tired throughout the movie. It gives the Ethan Hunt character no room to grow as an individual nor showcase his intelligence which is why he is supposed to be a top agent besides always having a unique instinct for situations.
Overall the movie will entertain you and is definitely worth watching especially for action film buffs and fans of the Cruise. However this movie really lacks depth in terms of the characters, story, background, etc which can take a lot away from those who want a good spy/espionage movie that makes you think. I wont be adding this to my collection because I still feel only the first Mission Impossible is worth having while the rest are just pure entertainment.
