It seems each year the annual Passport to Taiwan festival keeps growing in size, with this years being the biggest one yet. Taking up the northern section of Union Square Park, theĀ event must have easily brought in several thousands on a very hot and humid late spring day, which felt more like mid summer. The temperature had hit the high 80s by midday without a cloud in sight. The event encompassed all of Taiwan’s culture and history and featured many talented performers as well. Arts and crafts made it highly accessible to all ages, even traditional face painting for the young ones.
My main reason for attending was of course the live musical performances by unique bands featuring locals with Taiwanese heritage. I was particularly looking to seeing Exit Clov, Hsu-nami, and the Notorious MSG. Each band brought they’re own musical style which not only highlighted the heritage but their American influences, showcasing everything from folk to rock to hip hop, and even some classic soul. It was a good time out under the hot sun, even if yours truly had to seek refuge under the shade for a while.
